Sherman Alexi wrote about how exactly he learned to read in his type of
situation, in “Superman and Me.” When he starts the story he says that he was
always around books and that one of the main reasons that he wanted to learn
how to read was because of the fact that his dad loved it. He started by
reading some of the books but he wasn’t able to understand it at first then he
found a Superman comic book and as he was looking at it, he correlated the
pictures with words that he knew and assumed that’s what the writing had in it.
Literacy in the life of Alexi was crucial to him, because he didn’t want to end
up like another statistic. He also wanted to make it so that it would encourage
all of the other people on the reservation that he was on to read more, and
also try harder to succeed in the goals that they set for themselves and never
to give up on them.
In my life I found that I never
really enjoyed reading and in some ways it has hindered me in some of the
classes that I have taken in the past, but in comparison to Alexi literacy
wasn’t something that I had strived for. When thinking about which of the
narratives that I related to the most it was probably Alexi’s because he taught
himself through pictures and that was one of the ways that I was able to comprehend
the stories a little better if I didn’t understand what exactly I was reading.
